Ancestry.com requires a paid subscription to the census. It is also available free at Family History Centers.
Genealogy.com requires a paid subscription. There is no way to access Genealogy.com for free.
HeritageQuest.com sells subscriptions to libraries. You must access this service through a library that subscribes to Heritage Quest. Brigham Young University subscribes to this service so HeritageQuest is free to all current Brigham Young University students.
The index on FamilySearch.org is free to everyone. To view the images of the 1880 Census, you must have a subscription to the census on Ancestry.com or you must be an LDS church member signed into familysearch.org with your church membership number and confirmation date.
Census4all.com has head of household indexes for several states. The indexes are available to the general public. You must purchase the images.
