Description “WYMERING, a parish in the hundred of Portsdown, Portsdown division of the county of Southampton, 4Ľ miles (West) from Havant, containing 625 inhabitants. The living is a vicarage, annexed to the rectory of Widley, in the archdeaconry and docease of Winchester. The church is dedicated to St. Peter and Saint Paul. The northern end of Portsea island, where Hilsea barracks stand, and across which are strong lines of defence, forms a part of this parish, and is connected with the main portion of it by Pos bridge, which crosses the narrow channel between Porsmouth and Langston harbours, and terminates in a tęte-du-pont. Great and Little Horsea islands, at the upper end of the former harbour, are also in this parish. An annuity of ₤2, the bequest of John Taylor, is applied in teaching poor children of the parishes of Wymering and Widley.” --A Topographical Dictionary of England by Leiws (1831) |
